“Find peace in chaos” is the creative mantra for Lee Brooks, the founder of the heritage jewelry brand Alex & Lee in 1970. Creative collaborations with surrealist artists Salvador Dali and Ernst Fuchs, as well as fashion designers Geoffrey Beene, Oscar de la Renta, and Proenza Schouler, illustrate the unique style and versatility of Brooks’ artistic vocabulary.
Merging feathers and shells, wire and hammered metal, fossils and gemstones, found objects and collage, hand dyed cording and trim, into one of a kind wearable talismans, Alex Mate’ and Lee Brooks shared their creative journey until Mate’s death in 1992. In 1995, Brooks met fiber artist and hair stylist Greg Franke. The two merged lives and visual energies, initiating the era of Alex & Lee & Greg. The pair continues the Alex & Lee tradition of wearable art, as well as joint ventures into wall pieces and print media. Inspirations include tribal arts, psychedelia, orientalia, and surrealism.
