Robert Ervin (d. 2017) began sculpting in wood and stone over 40 years ago when he began combining his love for the California coast with the creativity of his hands and heart. Hiking and exploring beaches led him to treasure naturally found materials.
Although he started sculpting in rare types of woods, over time he began working in bronze using various patinas, creating new forms as well as duplicating some of the cherished pieces that he had first sculpted in wood. Bronze, he found, lent itself to a high degree of sophistication, which complimented the simple, clean lines that are indicative of his work. He created abstract forms as he worked in partnership with his materials. Discovery of the form contained in the material was his adventure. Flowing, sleek and abstract lines were his passion and joy.
